Description
Elusive Zulu is an Elusive Quality mare from a wonderful family. She is out of the three-time city winning mare Bravo Zulu, who also ran 4th at Group and Listed level on four occasions including the Group 1 Australia Stakes. Elusive Zulu is a half-sister to two stakes performers including the very talented GRAND ZULU, winner of the Group 1 BMW in track record time and comes from the family of SHALT NOT, the dam of AMELIA’S DREAM. In the breeding barn Elusive Zulu had an unfortunate start to her life as a broodmare, losing her first three foals to a series of unrelated accidents and sickness, but since that time she has produced lovely types, including the well regarded, but unlucky Guarded.
Elusive Zulu is currently in foal to Safeguard and is being sold to reduce numbers at the stud. Safeguard is clearly one of the most exciting additions to the WA stallion ranks for some years.
He:
• is a dual Group winning son of EXCEED AND EXCEL, considered the world’s greatest sire of 2 year olds;
• is out of PRESERVE (by CANNY LAD) who was a Group 1 winner at two and ranked the second top filly of her generation AND a half-sister to DENMAN, also a Group One winner and sire; and
• has a Golden Slipper winner in each of his first four (4) generations and a pedigree very similar to the 2019 Golden Slipper winner, KIAMICHI.
And he could run! Safeguard won his first three starts including the Group 3 ATC Kindergarten Stakes and the Group 3 MRC Vain Stakes, before going down narrowly in the Group 2 VRC Danehill Stakes.
While he had limited numbers, his results have been excellent. His first crop (now 4yo) statistics from 30 live foals has seen 29 named, 23 raced for 16 winners (70% winners to runners) and 6 placed. Add to that his two high class stakes performers in Miss West Coast and Specialism and you can see why he was the 2019 Champion 2yo and First Season sire in WA. His progeny have won from 1000m to 1600m on all types of going and are training on as three year olds.
