Description

If some of your buying prerequisites are to only purchase good types, as well as top-class performed fillies or mares, then you do not need to look any further than Sur La Mer.

.

Sur La Mer was a $300,000 yearling purchase at the 2019 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale, which at the time was a record price for a filly by Nicconi (a price which has been only bettered once since for a filly by her sire). Standing 15.2 1/2hh, as you would expect, Sur La Mer is a good strong sprinting type with excellent conformation, lovely scope, and movement. She is reported to have no vices.

.

A winner of 5 races and over $300,000 in prize money, Sur La Mer went oh so close in May to picking up that elusive black type, when finishing a close fifth in the Group 3 Scone RC Dark Jewel Classic (1400m). She appeared in the Steward’s Report as follows: “Had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the straight before improving into a narrow run between Riduna and Finepoint approaching the 200m”. While the respected racing website “Racing and Sports” noted in their race report “Settled in the second half of the field 5.5L, improved her position to be 8th 4.5L at the turn, came with a big run from well back and wasn't beaten far.”

.

There is little doubt Sur La Mer could have easily picked up a black type race on her day. Her NSW Benchmark Rating of 87 after the Dark Jewel is a good reflection of her having black type ability, as over the years we have seen plenty of mares with ratings below BM87, win at Listed and Group level.

.

Sur La Mer’s sire Nicconi requires no introduction. A prolific sire of winners (557 at present) and nearly $90 million in progeny earnings, his 27 stakes winners to date have been led by 9-time Group 1 winner and Australian Horse of Year Nature Strip. Far from a one trick pony, Nicconi has sired 20 horses in total which have won more than $500,000 on the track, including six $1 million+ earners.

.

Nicconi, as a broodmare sire, has kicked off this side of his career in tremendous fashion, with his daughters already having produced the extremely promising Group 3 winner Magic Time (by Hellbent), as well as the Listed Race winner A Very Fine Red (by Deep Field), as well as the Group 2 placed 2yo Boyfriend (by Snitzel). It is worth noting that his daughters look to be clicking well with all the major Australian sire lines.

.

The good news for Sur La Mer’s purchaser is that there is plenty happening close up in her family. Her Group 1 placed sister Lankan Star, which sold for $600,000 at this year’s Inglis Chairman’s Sale, is due to foal to leading Australian Second Season Sire Russian Revolution. This season Lankan Star has a date with twice Champion Australian Sire I Am Invincible. Apart from this positive news, she also has an unraced 3yo brother named First Beach, a $340,000 yearling purchase by Belmont Bloodstock for Bob Peters, currently in training with John Leek. Plus, her dam Clearwater Bay has a 2021 colt by Yes Yes Yes coming through the system.

.

If another of your buying prerequisites is to only purchase mares from strong female lines, then Sur La Mer ticks this box as well. Sur La Mer comes from one of the great Aga Khan’s families. A female line which has produced a multitude of Champions and Group 1 winners such as Opaline (Champion English 2yo), Shahrastani (Champion Irish 3yo, English & Irish Derbies), Recoletos (Champion European Miler), Bay Bridge (Ascot Champion Stakes), Shemaka (French Oaks), Technician, Shemima, Katiykha, Sharannpour, Shakeel, etc, etc.

.

Sur La Mer was recently retired from racing and is being offered for genuine unreserved sale as a broodmare prospect. She is presently in good health and condition, and as you can see from the attached breeding soundness certificate, she has already cycled, hence giving her purchaser the added bonus of being able to get her covered early in the season.
