Captivity (15.3hh) was a $125,000 yearling, the third highest priced Wanted filly of her year (24 sold). On retiring to stud, she has done an exemplary job as a broodmare having produced three live healthy foals three years in a row and is presently due to foal in October, 100% strike rate as a broodmare.

Captivity’s first foal McCain (by Shooting to Win) was a $65,000 Inglis Classic Sale yearling. Under the tutelage of leading trainer Patrick Payne, McCain was victorious at his second start as a 2-year-old over 1100m at Echuca last season, before venturing to Sandown at his third start in an Open 2-year-old race over 1300m. He was well fancied in the betting, starting as a $3.70 second favourite (firmed from $4.00). It wasn’t his day, as on jumping he was crowded at the start which forced him back to the rear of the field. He then had to make the widest run, with the hard run telling in the straight where he made up some ground to be beaten just under 4 lengths. McCain is now spelling, however, expect him to be back bigger and better next time in.

Captivity then has a 2018 Choisir filly and a 2019 Astern filly coming along to run for her. Video footage of both fillies can be viewed on this page.

Captivity sells in foal to Coolmore Stud’s exceptional first season sire, the very good looking Saxon Warrior (2019 fee = $22,500+GST). Saxon Warrior, an English Group 1 winning 2-year-old, and an English Classic winning 3-year-old (2000 Guineas), is a son of the all-conquering Japanese stallion Deep Impact. He is out of Champion European 2-year-old filly Maybe, a daughter of the legendary Galileo. Apart from these impeccable credentials, of major interest to Australian breeders is that Saxon Warrior comes from the same family as current star stallion Pierro.

Under her dam Pieta (a half-sister to 4 times Group 1 winner Divine Madonna) there is plenty of activity, with coverings, yearlings, unraced 2-year-olds and 3-year-olds coming through by Redoute’s Choice, Snitzel, Deep Field (2), The Autumn Sun, Star Witness, and Shamus Award. Stock by stallions of this quality will only help to embolden the family’s future fortunes.

As you can see, a lot of money has already been invested into Captivity, and she has done very little wrong to date, with plenty of possible upside to come. Captivity’s buyer will no doubt be the beneficiary of this at some future point.
