Formentera is a beautiful gelding by the sensational sire I AM INVINCIBLE, who was a brilliant sprinter – five wins at 1000, 1100 metres and $270,050 in prizemoney – Group 3 SAJC DC McKay Stakes, Listed MRC Sir John Monash Stakes and second to Takeover Target in the Group 1 SAJC Goodwood Handicap.
Formentera took out his maiden on his third career start at Warwick Farm, beating six subsequent winners including Elizabeel who’s since placed on multiple occasions in Stakes Races. He followed this up with a close second in the 2020 Clarendon Stakes at Rosehill.
He had issues with quarter cracks following this, which kept him off the track until September 2020. He was disappointing when tenth at Mornington, but he had another quarter crack after that run which resulted in him having to spell until the end of February 2021.
He returned to Randwick in March and he made wonderful progress for four weeks before then developing some soreness in his off hind (see vet report attached). He’s been spelling since 29th April, and he’ll have 2-3-weeks of box rest before being assessed to go into a paddock for another 2-3-weeks. He’s always shown an abundance of talent, and this is why we have been patient and given him the time he needs to come right. We’re hopeful that once he has this current spell under his belt, he can strengthen and develop into a force to be reckoned with as a four-year-old.
