Description

Lakerball is very fast dual US stakes winning 2yo on Turf, with Group 1 form all around her. Highlights of her race career:-

.

(1) 2nd start – at 2, broke her maiden over 5.5 furlongs (on Dirt) at the famed Del Mar. After being 2.5 lengths in the lead at the top of the straight, she moved further away from her opponents to crush them by an increasing 8.5 length margin at the finish line.

.

(2) 4th start – at 2, won the Listed Santa Anita Surfer Girl Stakes (8 furlongs on Turf), Lakerball showed plenty of pace from the outside gate to take the lead and was never headed, grabbing victory over subsequent Group 1 winner Lady Prancealot (Santa Anita American Oaks), Group 3 winner Miss Bigly (Oaklawn Park Bayakoa Stakes), and last start Listed Winner Summering (Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf).

.

(3) 5th start – at 2, won the Listed Golden Gate Pike Place Dancer Stakes (8 furlongs on Turf), Lakerball confirmed herself as a very talented 2-year-old. This time sitting just off the pace, she moved the lead at the top of the straight to smash her opposition by a widening 5 lengths margin, recording the best time of the meet over at that distance.

.

(4) 7th start – as an early 3-year-old, Lakerball also performed admirably finishing third (beaten 3.5 lengths) in the Listed Santa Anita California Cup Oaks (8 furlongs on Turf), to subsequent Group 1 winner Muncho Unusual (Santa Anita Rodeo Drive Stakes). Lakerball was giving the winner 4lbs in weight, and with last start Group 3 winner Apache Princess (Santa Anita Sweet Life Stakes) in their trail.

.

(5) 8th start – finished fourth in the Grade 3 Santa Anita Providencia Stakes (8.5 furlongs on Turf at level weights), beaten just under 1 length. After looking a winning chance with 100m to run, Lakerball was run down over the concluding stages, by Hostess and subsequent Group 1 winners Maxim Rate (Santa Anita Gamely Stakes) and the aforementioned Lady Prancealot.

.

Lakerball is her sire Lakerville’s best runner to date. A highly talented stakes winning sprinter, who never finished worse than second (up to 6.5f) in his short career, Lakerville has a 60% winners/runners strike rate. By Unusual Heat (by Nureyev), Unusual Heat took the general California Sire Championship seven times, the California Sire Turf Championship a record fourteen times. He is the all-time leading California sire for total progeny earnings exceeding US$56 million, US$34 million of those being turf earnings. According to the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, Unusual Heat is the greatest and most successful California stallion of all time.

.

Out of 2yo winner Category Ten, by Capsized, broodmare sire of 34 runners, 22 winners (64.7%) and 3 stakes horses (8.8%). Category Ten is a half-sister to million-dollar earner and Group 1 winner Ultra Blend (11 wins (8 black type) from 25 starts). At the completion of her racing career, Ultra Blend was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida (Northern Farm) and so far, bred 3 winners in Japan including Bear in Mind (A$638,180), Sir Houston (A$438,150) and Pure Blend (A$312,400 – a last start winner in Tokyo on the 5th June 2022). Category Ten’s dam Ankha has also produced a further 4 winners including the stakes placed Swing Thoughts (by US Ranger) and Lil Nugget (by Mining for Money), dam of the high-class US sprinter Dr. Schivel (by Violence). From just 10 starts to date, the now 4-year-old has collected the 2020 Group 1 Del Mar Futurity and the 2021 Group 1 Del Mar Bing Crosby Stakes, the 2021 Group 2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship, and was beaten a nose in the 2021 Group 1 US Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Dr Schivel was last seen in March this year, running third (beaten 2 lengths) in the Group 1 Meydan Dubai Golden Shaheen.

.

For pedigree buffs, digging further into Lakerball’s female line, this is a family which has interestingly had most of its success in Australia! The family has produced an enormous number of Group 1 performers in here including Peeping (STC Coolmore Classic), Ruthven (BRC Queensland Derby), Young Brolga (Champion Australian 2yo), Kapalaran (VATC 1000 Guineas), Eurozone (MRC CF Orr Stakes), Torvill (ATC Surround Stakes), Tango Master (VRC Newmarket Hcp), Cangronde (VRC Lightning Stakes), Better Gleam (AJC Oaks), Vicenza (VATC Blue Diamond), Triad, Euphrates, etc, etc.

.

Apart from Lakerball coming from an outstanding producing female line, US bred mares have had considerable success at stud in Australia. Noted for being fast, tough and precocious, they have produced a multitude of Group 1 winners in the past 20+ years including Exceed and Excel, Flying Spur, Foxwedge, Mahogany, Makybe Diva, Miss Finland, Northern Meteor, Russian Revolution, and in the just completed 2021/22 season Forbidden Love, Wild Ruler and Apache Chase, along with current star sprinter Home Affairs, whose grand dam was a US import.

.

Lakerball was a fast 2yo stakes winner, with impeccable Group 1 form close-up in her family. There is no doubt she would be a great addition to any commercial broodmare band. She has been measured at a tick over 15.2 ½ hands high, has no vices and a good temperament. She has been rugged and had an Equilume mask on her since mid-July.

.

PLEASE NOTE THIS FAMILY’S ABILITY TO UPGRADE THE STALLIONS IT HAS VISITED.
