Description
Superbly bred young mare by a Champion Sire and in-foal to a proven Gr1 stallion
Oceanway is a daughter of 4-time Champion Sire Snitzel who is fast making his mark as a broodmare sire, his daughters having produced 23 SWs including Gr1 winner Mossfun (Golden Slipper) and Gr2 winners Daisies, Super Smink, Lavish Girl, North Star Lass & Marine One. She is a three-quarter blood-sister to the ill-fated Beneteau (a former $1m yearling), who was a Group winner and Gr1-placed in the Blue Diamond Stakes at 2 before a bright stallion career cut short by his premature demise.
Slice of Paradise, the SP dam of this mare has twice sold yearlings for $1m and another (a filly) for $500k. Hardly surprising given that she is a full sister to Champion 3YO Filly Alinghi, a winner of 11 races incl. 4 at Gr1 level – Blue Diamond S., Thousand Guineas, Swettenham Stud S. & Newmarket H..
Oceanway’s first foal is a yearling colt by Gr1 winner and Co-Champion 2YO Castelvecchio which realised $140,000 at auction this year while her 2nd foal is a weanling filly by Maurice. She sells back in foal again to Maurice who was Australia's Champion Second Season Sire of 2021/22 and the current leading Third Season Sire of 2022/23. Maurice is the best Japanese racehorse ever to stand at stud outside Japan, being named Japan’s 2015 Horse of the Year, Champion Sprinter & Champion Miler and he won the Longines Hong Kong Cup Gr1 at Sha Tin. Maurice is now the sire of five Gr1 winners including triple Australian Classic winner Hitotsu & top-flight sprinter Mazu. Already, with only three crops of racing age, Maurice is among the top dozen Australian sires in 2022/23 with earnings of $10.3 million and 10 stakes performers including Group-winning 3YOs Bank Maur & Kibou, as well as Everest & TJ Smith Gr1 placegetter Mazu.
The prospective foal this mare is carrying is bred on the same Maurice-Redoute’s Choice nick as Gr1 winner Hitotsu (Australian Derby, Victoria Derby, Australian Guineas), Gr2 winner Bank Maur and 2yo SWs Namesake and Azula.
There is tremendous upside in this mare’s immediate family with close distaff relatives carrying pregnancies or with young, unraced stock by Dundeel, Maurice, Pinatubo, Harry Angel, Castelvecchio, Admire Mars, Shalaa, Russian Camelot and Mikki Isle.
