Summary of Race Form:
31 August – Maiden, 1400m Bendigo – finished 1st
Won on debut closing off extremely well, running 11.3 lengths above the class benchmark for his last 600m, he ran the best last 600m and 400m of the race and ran some of the best closing sectionals of the entire day.
25 October – Geelong Classic, Listed Race, 2200m Geelong – finished 3rd
Finished 3rd with a strong closing finish, running the best last 200m of the race.
4 November – VRC Derby, G1, 2500m Flemington – finished 4th
Finished 4th to Riff Rocket and Apulia. He travelled really well through the race to finish 4th with a further 4.4 lengths back to fifth, defeating the likes of Stakes horses Verdad, Make A Call, Air Assault, Gates etc.
He is a versatile galloper who can win from 1400m to 2000m+ as evidenced by his impressive win on debut and his strong closing sectionals in all of his races.
Since the Derby Kosgei has been spelling with the view to targeting the G1 Australian Derby in the Autumn.
His pedigree also suggests he will improve as he matures physically:
- Tavago, half brother to Kosgei, was an impressive 3.3 lengths winner of the G1 Australian Derby over 2400m at Randwick as an autumn 3YO defeating G1 winners Jameka, Tarzino, Vanburgh etc.
- He is from the family of 2-time Group winner in Hong Kong Straight Arron whose recent wins include the G2 Jockey Club Cup over 2000m at Sha Tin defeating the likes of Senor Toba, Russian Emperor, Money Catcher, Glorious Dragon etc.
- Kosgei is a son of 5-time G1 winner and Champion 3YO Colt in Australia, The Autumn Sun, winner of the G1 Golden Rose, G1 Randwick Guineas, G1 Caulfield Guineas and G1 Rosehill Guineas as a 3YO from 1400m – 2000m.
Kosgei is a big, strong, athletic gelding with plenty of scope and who is very correct and attractive. He has a wonderful, calm temperament. Anyone who has seen him or had anything to do with him have commented on his impressive physique and lovely nature.
Kosgei stands at 16.2hh and currently weighs 532kgs
