Description
Glenisla is a lightly raced 4 year old mare having had just 4 starts to date. Being by Highland Reel, the mare was given time to strengthen and mature before making her racecourse debut as a late 3 year old. Her owners are seeking to move her on as she is not showing metropolitan level ability at present. She pulled up sound and well following her most recent start on 9 December.
What a remarkable job Highland Reel did on the track - the globe-trotting six times Group 1 winning galloper successful over a variety of distances between 1400m and 2400m; showing off his talent in England, Ireland, France, America, Hong Kong, Dubai and Australia.
Winning two editions of the prestigious Hong Kong International Vase, he also won major races on Epsom Derby Day, Breeders Cup Day and on two occasions at Royal Ascot. He ventured overseas many times including to Australia where he was a game third behind Winx in the first of her four W.S Cox Plates.
A horse who improved with age and maturity, Highland Reel is siring progeny of the same ilk; they need a bit of time and the four-year-old Glenisla is a member of his first Australian crop... noting that he has sired stakes winners locally as well as in America, Ireland and Italy.
The lightly raced Glenisla was not far away at her first couple of starts in Victoria; not having the best of luck on either occasion (in limited room at debut, not in the right part of the track at her second go) and when fifth at Seymour she finished in front of the recent Moonee Valley winner Grand Touraine.
A $125,000 yearling, Glenisla is an attractive half-sister to the durable sprinter Greyworm - winner of nine of his 46 starts and ten times in the placings, amassing over $630,000 in stakes; at his best winning the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes... a race in which the next four home were Group 1 winners.
Glenisla and Greyworm's dam Miracle Magic improved with racing and retired with a very nice record of four wins and six placings from 30 starts, successful at metropolitan level in Sydney. Able to win from on pace or from behind, she won from 1350m to 1900m.
Still at stud - last year foaling a Fierce Impact filly and the year before a Rich Enuff colt, Miracle Magic hails from a prolific local family whose members in recent times have been visiting the likes of King's Legacy, So You Think, Pierata, The Autumn Sun, Too Darn Hot, Savabeel, Deep Field, Pride Of Dubai, Saxon Warrior, Justify, Wild Ruler, Russian Revolution, Exceedance, Toronado, Zoustar, Maurice, Ole Kirk, Street Boss, Tassort and Portland Sky. Miracle Magic has a Fierce Impact colt at foot and was covered by Darley's new season sire Paulele.
Which gives Glenisla plenty of upside as a breeding prospect - and Highland Reel is certainly bred to be a broodmare sire... he is by Galileo (broodmare sire of 311 stakes winners including 53 Group 1 winners) out of a mare by Danehill (419 stakes winners, 83 Group 1 mares) out of a mare by Marscay (92 stakes winners, 23 Group 1 winners).
Whilst Highland Reel hails from one of Australia's favourite and most prolific Group 1 families... that of Circles Of Gold (his grandam), Elvstroem, Haradasun and Starspangledbanner - Glenisla is also able to boast high class relations.
She is a descendant of the exceptional two-year-old Midnight Fever, winner of five of her six juvenile starts including the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes and also high class at three - winning twice at Group 2 level, finishing second in the Group 1 1000 Guineas and sixth in the Group 1 W.S Cox Plate quinellaed by Rubiton and Our Poetic Prince.
The Group 1 Australian Guineas winner Rock Classic is also a descendant of Midnight Fever as are the stakes winners Woppitt, Astrodame, Candika, Mahisara and Ulmann. And this is a family that has been achieving great things for generations... Glenisla being a descendant of the acclaimed matriarch Lady Josephine.
