Headliner was a great looking yearling, selling for $170,000 at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast January Sale, making her the second highest priced filly from her sire Star Turn’s first crop.

As her name might suggest, Headliner was in the headlines from her very first start. Jumping awkwardly and missing the start by 2 lengths, she zoomed home into second place (beaten 2.8 lengths) by another debutante named Stay Inside, with the very smart and subsequently multiple stakes placed Ashema in third place (Ashema recently sold for $500,000 at the 2022 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale). It’s well known that three starts later Stay Inside would go on to win the Golden Slipper by 1.8 lengths and was crowned Australian Champion 2yo. Headliner, she was to have two more starts as a 2yo, both in Stakes Races, however on Soft ground which she unfortunately was unable to handle.

The Waller Stable had extremely high hopes for Headliner’s 3yo Spring campaign, with the Group 1 ATC Flight Stakes pencilled in as her main target. A slight setback meant she would be unable to get back to the track in time for a Flight Stakes preparation. Headliner’s next appearance came in a Rosehill Mid-Week race over 1300m in early October, where she acquitted herself well, making up 2 lengths in the straight to run fifth (beaten 1.8 lengths). Stepped straight into Black Type company at her next start in the ATC Reginald Allen (Listed Race), Headliner regrettably found herself well back in the pack and four wide without cover coming to the home turn. She performed admirably, despite a difficult run, she still managed to make up ground in the straight, finishing 3.4 lengths behind the winner Fangirl, and just 0.4 lengths behind the third placed Decent Raine.

Headliner was to have four more lifetime starts, all on Sydney tracks, and on each occasion, she again ran with distinction, never finishing further back than 3 lengths from the winner, and in some cases having torrid runs where she was either inconvenienced by other runners or caught wide. On two occasions she still managed to finish in second place, once over 1100m, and the other over 1300m on the 23rd of March. After this start, a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have bled from the nearside nostril. Headliner was to have more one start, which occurred on the 25th of April, where she finished fourth (beaten 2 lengths) over 1100m at Randwick (Kensington). She was a filly which we never got to see the best of on the track.

By a leading second crop sire in Star Turn, a stallion whose service fee has jumped from $16,500 to $27,500 in the exploits of his progeny to date. Star Turn currently sits in third position on the Second Crop Sires List (all earnings), just over $400,000 behind Capitalist ($99,000 fee), and with 70 fewer starters. He is also the third leading Second Crop Sire for winners (45), just one winner behind Shalaa ($33,000 fee), a stallion which has had another 20+ starters. Star Turn’s best runners to date include recent HK Group 3 winner Cordyceps Six, and the Listed Race winners Me Me Lagarde ($543,700) and Miss Hipster ($303,976), as well as the dual Group 1 placed filly Startantes ($459,000).

Headliner is the first foal of the handy race mare Sanaya, a winner and seven times Sydney & Melbourne placed. A daughter of the phenomenon More Than Ready, the toughest and most durable shuttle stallion we have ever known. Sire of over 2,000 winners in 40 different countries, 214 Stakes Winners and progeny earnings of $270 million. He is now in the process of eclipsing these figures as a broodmare sire, with his daughters already having produced 1,700 winners, 132 Stakes Winners and earnings fast approaching $250 million. Sanaya’s second foal is an unraced 2yo brother to Headliner named Atacama. An $80,000 yearling, he is in training with renowned trainer Paul Perry. Sanaya has a 2021 colt by Headwater and was covered by Caulfield Guineas winner Ole Kirk in 2021.

Headliner’s next two dams were both excellent race mares and are both by Champion Sires – Group 2 winner Astrodame (by Flying Spur) and the undefeated Sydney winner Tirumani (by Last Tycoon). Her fourth dam was the flying Midnight Fever (by Luskin Star), Champion Australian 2yo Filly. This has been a tremendous producing family, especially for fast, early precocious juveniles, and have included the likes of Frolic, Leveller, Mahisara, Candika, Woppitt, Campbell Fever, Startling Lass, Shovhog and Shovoff – all Black Type performers as 2yo’s with Startling Lass, Shovhog and Frolic all placing in the Golden Slipper.

A filly who just missed out on securing a Sydney Black Type placing, Headliner is a good boned filly with a lovely temperament, standing at 16.1 ½ hh, she is the perfect addition to any stud’s broodmare band. With 2 year old precocity and activity within the family, this young mare is not to be missed. Headliner is being offered as a Broodmare Prospect only.
