Lakerball sells in foal to leading proven sire Pierro. Sire of 38 SW’s; 24 GW’s; 6 Gr1W’s and ranked in the top 20 Australian Sires at stud for the past 7 seasons. Sire of the Australasian record priced yearling – the $10 million filly out of Winx. Even with removing this sale result from Pierro’s 2024 yearling sale results, his other 46 yearlings averaged $157,000, and sold for up to $600,000.
.
Lakerball’s racing highlights included:
.
Broke her maiden by 8.5 lengths over 5.5 furlongs (on Dirt) at the Del Mar at her second start.
.
Won the Santa Anita Surfer Girl Stakes (Listed Race, 8 furlongs on Turf) at her fourth start. Led all the way. Victorious over Group 1 winner Lady Prancealot (Santa Anita American Oaks), Group 3 winner Miss Bigly (Oaklawn Park Bayakoa Stakes), and last start Listed Race winner Summering (Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf).
.
Won the Golden Gate Pike Place Dancer Stakes (Listed Race, 8 furlongs on Turf) by 5 lengths at her fifth start, recording the fastest time of the whole meet.
.
Third (beaten 3.5 lengths) in the Santa Anita California Cup Oaks (Listed Race, 8 furlongs on Turf), to subsequent Group 1 winner Muncho Unusual (Santa Anita Rodeo Drive Stakes). Lakerball was giving the winner 4lbs in weight, and with last start Group 3 winner Apache Princess (Santa Anita Sweet Life Stakes) in their trail.
.
Fourth in the Santa Anita Providencia Stakes (Group 3, 8.5 furlongs on Turf), beaten just under 1 length. After looking the winner with 100m to run, Lakerball was run down in the concluding stages by Hostess, and subsequent Group 1 winners Maxim Rate (Santa Anita Gamely Stakes) and Lady Prancealot (Santa Anita American Oaks).
.
Lakerball is her sire Lakerville’s best runner. A talented SW sprinter, who never finished worse than second in his short career, Lakerville has a 61% winners/runners strike rate. By Unusual Heat (by Nureyev), Unusual Heat was Champion Californian Sire seven times, and the Champion Californian Turf Sire a record fourteen times. He is the all-time leading California sire for total progeny earnings exceeding US$56 million. The California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association have described Unusual Heat as “the greatest and most successful California stallion of all time.”
.
Lakerball is out of 2yo winner Category Ten, a half-sister to US$1 million earner and Group 1 winner Ultra Blend (11 wins (8 black type) from 25 starts). At the completion of her racing career, Ultra Blend was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida. To date she has bred 4 winners including Bear in Mind (A$638,180 earnings), Sir Houston (A$438,150) and Pure Blend (A$321,725).
.
Category Ten’s dam Ankha has also produced a further 4 winners including the stakes placed Swing Thoughts, and Lil Nugget, dam of the recently retired high-class US sprinter Dr. Schivel, a Group 1 winning 2yo and 3yo in the USA and now standing at Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky.
.
Apart from the close-up Group 1 winners Ultra Blend and Dr. Schivel, Lakerball’s family has had most of its success in Australia, where Group 1 performers include Peeping (STC Coolmore Classic), Ruthven (BRC Queensland Derby), Young Brolga (Champion Australian 2yo), Kapalaran (VATC 1000 Guineas), Eurozone (MRC CF Orr Stakes), Torvill (ATC Surround Stakes), Tango Master (VRC Newmarket Hcp), Cangronde (VRC Lightning Stakes), Better Gleam (AJC Oaks), Vicenza (VATC Blue Diamond), etc, etc.
.
It is also worth noting this family’s ability to upgrade the stallions it has visited.
LAKERBALL – her sire Lakerville’s best performer.
ULTRA BLEND – her sire Richly Blended’s best performer.
DR. SCHIVEL – his sire Violence’s best performer.
DISTANT RUNNER – her sire Distant Day’s best performer.
.
Renowned for being fast, tough and precocious, US bred broodmares have produced a multitude of Australian Group 1 winners in the past 20+ years including Exceed and Excel, Flying Spur, Foxwedge, Mahogany, Makybe Diva, Miss Finland, Northern Meteor, Russian Revolution, Forbidden Love, Wild Ruler, and more recently Group 1 winning 2yo’s Manaal (2024 ATC Sire’s Produce S) and King Colorado (2023 BRC JJ Atkins S).
.
Lakerball was a fast 2yo stakes winner, with impeccable Group 1 form close-up in her family. She would be a terrific addition to any commercial broodmare band. She is measured to stand 15.2 ½ hands high, has no vices and a good temperament. As imported mares can sometimes do, Lakerball missed in her first season at stud in Australia to Trapeze Artist. Last season she cycled normally and went straight in foal to Pierro on an early September cover.
